My grandfather was the only person I remember who loved to watch me
sing and dance.
When I was 6… he died. So I would visit his grave every day
at Calvary Cemetery.
I would sing his two favorite songs…Torna Sorrento and She Wore
an Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini. Afterwards I would
sing to the Guerrera’s in front of my grandfather… the
Mancini’s to the left….. the Rinaldi’s to the right…and
the Marciano’s in back.
My best friends became my grandfather’s neighbors. I had absolutely
no fear…for it was so clear to me that these residents needed
some cheering up and that was definitely me!
I learned at an early age to laugh at myself and never take myself
too seriously. It keeps your life in perspective. My Italian grandmother
was one of the wisest women I have ever met. She would always say,
“Luigi, every day above-a da ground is-a good-a day…..
cause-a when-a you dead… you dead a long-a time.”…..
which became one of my favorite songs that I have ever written.”
THE TWO PAISANS. ....free classical
music for brides to be
Long before there were the Three Tenors...there were The Two Paisans,
baritone, Louis Nichole, and tenor, Dr Ralph Giuliano.
The two friends began singing traditional opera/ classical/ sacred
music in church for relatives and friends. But wasn’t long
before “Ralph and Louie” realized that there were many
“brides to be” that wanted The Three Tenors/ Boccelli
style music....but either there was no one who could sing the arias
or it was too expensive for most brides to hire a duet.
So, the Two Paisans were originated.... a no charge service for
any bride to be in Connecticut.
Nichole spent 3 weeks in a recording studio with Lee Musiker (Tony
Bennett’s musical director) and several musicians from the
Philharmonic and recorded their own “music will travel.”.....
so they would eliminate the problem of organists who could not sight
read their music.
Some of their sacred music includes Panis Angelicus, Ave Maria by
Caccini and Gounod,, Domine Deus, Pieta Signore, Somebody Bigger
Than You and I and other solo pieces not usually heard as a duet.
The Two Paisans also sing at funerals at no charge, but Giuliano
says...”As you can imagine, it is a little harder to plan
ahead of time, so availability is based on both the singers’
schedules. But we really try to accommodate everyone. We want to
be a part of making people’s lives better during the happiest
and saddest times in their lives. “That’s what our Italian
parents taught us... and we want to carry out that tradition.
